Grass Spiders

Have you ever spotted funnel shaped spider webs around your windows or fence? It could be the web of a grass spider.

Although they do not pose a serious risk to humans, grass spiders can be intimidating to those with a fear of spiders. They also tend to build rather large webs in various locations in and around your home, which can be a nuisance. However, professional spider control services can help.

What Are Grass Spiders?

Grass Spider
Grass spiders have very pronounced features, which set them apart from other spider species.

They range from 9mm to 20mm in size, the females being the largest, with oblong bodies and long curved legs.

Like most spiders, grass spiders also have a hard top section that protects their eyes, which ranges from yellow to brown in color.

They also have dark lines that extend from their eyes to their midsection, as well as another set of narrow dark stripes located on the sides of their lower section.

Their abdomens are also usually darker than their top section, and they also include lighter colored lines on them.

Grass spiders are also known by their funnel-shaped shelters located at the end of their webs. They are also sometimes referred to as funnel spiders.

Their webs in and of themselves also differ from other spider webs in that they do not contain an adhesive to trap their prey. Instead, these spiders rely on their web's intricate design to obstruct winged prey in flight. Once they are disrupted, they simply fall onto the web for the grass spider to seize.

Grass spiders webs' are often observed outdoors in various around your yard, including on ground cover, windows, fences, grass, bushes, wood piles, and weeds. However, once they enter your home, they will usually build their rather concave, horizontal, sheetlike webs just about anywhere in your home to catch prey, as well as to remain hidden.

This spider species is mostly only an indoor problem during the summer and fall. However, their hatch-lings typically emerge as adults at the end of summer, so it is not uncommon to spot them inside at that time of the season.

Do Grass Spiders Pose Any Risks?

Their bites are usually accompanied by redness, swelling, and irritation at the site, which may last up to 10 days.

Treating Grass Spiders

Grass spiders are known to enter your home via openings around your exterior. To help with grass spider control, it is a good idea to inspect the outside of your property for cracks, gaps, and other entryways these spiders can use to get inside.

Since grass spiders are also attracted to many insects around your home, you should also be sure to eliminate any harborage areas for insects near your property, which will help prevent grass spiders in your home.

A pest control technician can also inspect and treat your property seasonally for grass spiders, both inside and out, to help keep them at bay.
